Silverbacks get back on winning track in Milwaukee |
Dealing with a rash of injuries, the Miami Valley Silverbacks were able to make some key adjustments to shake a five game losing streak in Milwaukee on Sunday.
George Murray started at quarterback for the injured Jim Oliver and other players stepped in to fill roles they were not used to playing as the Silverbacks claimed a thrilling 43-42 win to improve to 2-5 on the season.
“It is nice just to get a win, period,” head coach Carl Allen said. “You are always happy to have guys step up. George is a good quarterback. It is not a position foreign to him, but he hasn’t played there in awhile.
“Everyone stepped up and did what they had to do.” |

Silverbacks can't take momentum in 61-33 loss |
The Miami Valley Silverbacks had a hard time hanging onto momentum Saturday night as they dropped a 61-33 decision to Marion at Rapid Fire Field at Hobart Arena.
The Silverbacks started the game out with a quick score as Jim Oliver connected with Maurice Lee for a scoring strike and a 6-0 lead. Joey Owens picked off former Buckeye Stanley Jackson’s first pass, but the Mayhem returned the favor on the next play on a ball intended for George Murray.
Oliver connected with Donta Greene for a scoring strike and a 12-7 lead with 2:41 left in the first quarter and the Silverbacks extended the lead when Oliver and Lee hooked up for a 35-yard scoring strike and a 18-7 lead.
Marion, however, scored the last 12 points of the half, including a safety with less than 30 tickets left in the half and a field goal off the ensuing free kick to take a 19-18 lead at the break. Marion pushed the lead to 26-18 on a reverse, but the Silverbacks fought back to tie the score at 26 when Oliver and Lee connected for the third time on a 15-yard scoring strike. Greene fought his way into the end zone for the conversion and the score was tied.
However, Marion re-took the momentum with 21 straight points, 14 of which came off Miami Valley Turnovers, to take a 47-26 lead. Oliver got the Silverbacks within two scores when he connected with Lee for a fourth time, this time a 19-yard scoring strike with 1:42 left in the third quarter.
The Silverbacks, however, could not find the end zone in the final stanza as Marion tacked on two more scores to take the win.
The Silverbacks return to action Sunday afternoon when they travel to Milwaukee before returning to Hobart Arena on May 2 when they square off with the Fort Wayne Freedom at 7:30. Tickets are still available at the Hobart Arena box office, or online at www.hobartarena.com. |
